The band has since experienced multiple line-up changes, with Tony Iommi the only constant presence in the band through the years. Originally formed in 1968 as a heavy blues rock band named Earth, the band began incorporating occult themes with horror-inspired lyrics and tuned-down guitars. Despite an association with occult and horror themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and apocalyptic prophecies of the horrors of war. Osbourne's heavy drug use led to his dismissal from the band in 1979. He was replaced by former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio. After a few albums with Dio's vocals and songwriting collaborations, Black Sabbath endured a revolving line-up in the 1980s and 1990s that included vocalists Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen and Tony Martin, as well as multiple members of Deep Purple and Rainbow. In 1992, Iommi and Butler rejoined Dio and drummer Vinny Appice to record Dehumanizer. The original line-up reunited with Osbourne in 1997 and released a live album Reunion. Black Sabbath's 19th studio album, 13, which features all original members except Bill Ward, was released in June 2013. Black Sabbath are cited as pioneers of heavy metal. The band helped define the genre with releases such as Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970) and Master of Reality (1971). They were ranked by MTV as the "Greatest Metal Band" of all time, and placed second in VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them number 85 in their "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". They have sold over 70 million records worldwide. Black Sabbath were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

Paranoid (1971)

Not only is this the best Black Sabbath album, it is one of the best heavy metal albums ever. It includes the legendary singles "Iron Man" and "Paranoid" and is a defining moment in the history of heavy metal. Listen to this album and you will hear why every heavy metal band in history is descended from Black Sabbath. They defined a genre, and this album defined them.

 Master Of Reality (1971)

It's hard to believe that a band could release its two best albums in the same year, but that's exactly what Black Sabbath did. This was the follow up to Paranoid. It was only 8 songs long and 2 of those were brief instrumentals, but it showcased the brilliant guitar of Tony Iommi. It's also more complex than their first two albums and shows a marked musical progression.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973)

Their fifth album has something for everyone. There's another one of Iommi's instrumentals, and on the other end of the spectrum is the crushing title track. Ozzy's vocals are some of his best, and the production is also very good. The addition of Rick Wakeman from Yes on keyboards got mixed reviews at the time, but he did add something different to the mix.

Heaven And Hell (1980)

It's pretty difficult to replace a legend like Ozzy Osbourne, but doing it with a vocalist the caliber of Ronnie James Dio was a great move. The band sounded rejuvenated and Dio's vocal range allowed them to do a few more things. Every song is really good, but the title track is exceptional.

 Vol. 4 (1972)

Their fourth album showed both ends of the musical spectrum. On the softer side is the ballad "Changes," which had a lot of commercial success. On the other side of the coin is "Supernaut," a really fast and intense song. It tells you just how good Sabbath was when this album is only their fourth best.

I grew up  rock and roll. I tell you as I have told many others. Ozzy has some good serious and profound lyrics. For example back street kids has some great advice for anyone. The other songs are also excellent. Truth , honesty and straight forwardness is what you will find here. Enjoy the hard rock.

Unlike most bands, the story of Black Sabbath is one that has been told too many times, by too many people and each new attempt to do so usually complicates rather than elucidates the legend. Mic..
